Jewelry Modeller Level 1

Students will research and analyze real-world ring styles—classic, minimalist, and decorative—focusing on construction elements such as shank thickness, profile, setting types, and ornamentation. They’ll prepare a visual summary with photos and comments to learn how to interpret technical logic behind the form.

Students will set up the Rhino 8 workspace for jewelry modeling, including units (millimeters), snap settings, and viewports. They’ll create a precise 2D profile curve for a ring shank on the front plane, which will serve as the foundation for 3D modeling.

This session covers building two basic ring models: a smooth band using the Revolve tool, and a ring with a flat top using Extrude and Boolean operations. Students will learn how to turn flat curves into solid, closed 3D geometry.

In this hands-on class, students create a decorative element or custom text and apply it to the ring surface. Techniques such as FlowAlongSurface or Project will be used to produce detailed engraving or embossed reliefs.

Students will model a ring with a center stone, designing the setting (prongs or bezel). They’ll also add a row of small side stones along the shank, carefully placing them with correct spacing and tolerances. This introduces symmetry tools and array functions in practical use.

Students will explore variations of their base ring model by modifying the shank profile, height, and width. This builds confidence in editing geometry while maintaining structural integrity and design proportions.

This class focuses on signet-style rings with flat or domed tops. Students will add engravings or logos using projection or Boolean tools. These exercises build familiarity with common forms in men’s and unisex rings.

Students will model a pendant with a clean geometric shape—such as a disc or teardrop—complete with a hole or bail for the chain. Optional details like engravings or gemstones can be added. Attention is given to scale and thickness to ensure the piece is both aesthetic and manufacturable.

Using arrays, mirroring, and transformation tools, students will create several variations of a chosen ring model. The focus is on making creative changes—like stone layout or decorative accents—without starting from scratch.

Students will learn to check their models for print readiness: solid geometry, no naked edges, and proper thickness. After validation, they’ll export an STL file with optimized settings for 3D printing or simulation—building responsibility for the final quality.

Students will create realistic renderings of their jewelry, applying metal and gemstone materials, adjusting lighting, and background setups. They’ll produce at least two renders—on light and dark backgrounds—for their final presentation. The goal is to develop a sense of visual storytelling and presentation.

Each student completes a unique ring or pendant design that demonstrates their personal concept and applies techniques learned throughout the course. A final PDF presentation will include the design concept, renderings, STL file, and technical breakdown. The course concludes with a portfolio-style presentation, simulating a designer pitching to a client.
